Real Madrid advanced to the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup, defeating Juventus 1-0 at Hard Rock Stadium on Tuesday, thanks to a precise header from Gonzalo Garcia in the 54th minute.
Gonzalo Garcia's header proved to be the deciding factor in the match against Juventus.
The win sets up a quarter-final match against the winner of the Borussia Dortmund versus Monterrey game. Xabi Alonso's Madrid demonstrated maturity and discipline, displaying both resilience and skill in challenging conditions.
Adding to the positive atmosphere for the Spanish side was the return of Kylian Mbappe. The star forward, who had been out due to illness, entered the game in the 68th minute to a warm reception from the Miami crowd of 62,000.
Juventus, under the guidance of Igor Tudor, began the first half with intensity. Randal Kolo Muani missed an early chance, chipping the ball over the bar after a pass from Kenan Yildiz. Real Madrid gradually gained control, with Jude Bellingham and Federico Valverde forcing Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio into making crucial saves.
Madrid maintained their pressure after halftime, leading to the decisive goal. Trent Alexander-Arnold delivered an accurate cross from the right, which Garcia powerfully headed into the net, marking his third goal in four appearances.
"We needed patience and time to grow into the match," Alonso stated post-match. "This was a knockout game, and it's all about competing. We dug deep, and ultimately, we had to defend our lead. I'm pleased with that."
Juventus showed resilience, with Francisco Conceicao and Nicolas Gonzalez testing Thibaut Courtois, but their energy waned as the match progressed. Tudor acknowledged that fatigue played a significant role. "Many players were requesting substitutions – the stress, the heat, the humidity, and a long season took their toll," he explained.
Mbappe's return provided an encouraging glimpse into the future ahead of the quarter-finals. "He will improve day by day," Alonso commented. "I speak with him daily about how he's feeling. I anticipate he will be in much better condition for the next match."
