Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has doubled down on his insistence to persist with a back-three system, declaring that “not even the Pope” could convince him to change formation despite the team’s poor run of results.
Amorim, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November, endured a difficult start to life at Old Trafford, guiding United to just seven wins from 27 league matches last season, their worst-ever Premier League finish. This campaign has offered little respite, with only one win from four league games and a humiliating League Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town.
Despite mounting pressure, the Portuguese coach remains firm on his tactical identity. Asked if co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who visited United’s training ground this week, had suggested a change, Amorim was unequivocal.
“No, no, no... Not even the Pope will change this. This is my job. This is my responsibility. This is my life. So, I will not change that,” he told reporters ahead of United’s clash with Chelsea at Old Trafford.
Amorim defended his approach, insisting that abandoning his system under pressure would undermine his authority in the dressing room.
“If I’m a player and I have a coach that, with a lot of pressure and (people) all around the world saying, ‘You need to change the system’, says ‘I’m going to change’, they will look at me in a different way. Everything is important when you think about the impact that a decision is going to have on the team. I’m doing things my way. I hope to have the time to change, but it will be an evolution.”
The 39-year-old has also drawn criticism for redeploying Bruno Fernandes in a deeper midfield role, limiting the Portuguese playmaker’s attacking influence. Amorim argued the move is about control.
“I want Bruno to have more possession to try to control the game. Maybe he doesn’t have the same freedom to get inside the box but he is getting there and he can do his shots. Sometimes we miss Bruno in front a little bit, but if (Matheus) Cunha is there we have an extra player. He’s frustrated because he is not winning and sometimes he likes to go further. But he has a job to do.”
United will be desperate for a response against Chelsea, with Amorim’s tactical stubbornness once again under the spotlight.
