What’s your type? The optimum tyres for car performance

We’ve mentioned numerous times the importance of your tyres, both for your safety and the performance of your vehicle. However, we understand that selecting the right tyres can be a confusing process. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to identifying the optimum tyres for your car.

Identify your tyre requirements
You probably already know that your car handbook contains information on which tyre size and specification your vehicle requires. However, as well as the tyre requirements for your car you also need to identify whether you want specific tyres for the time of year. Summer tyres are the standard, but winter tyres will improve safety in wet and cold conditions (not sure, you might want to read our blog on whether winter tyres are necessary before you decide what’s right for you).

Identify your budget
Are you after cheap, mid-range or premium tyres? Knowing how much you’re willing to spend will help you narrow your search somewhat. If you’re considering saving money by purchasing part-worn tyres please think again (tyre safety authority TyreSafe warn about the dangers of part-worn tyres on their dedicated website To save money without compromising safety consider opting for a lower-cost tyre manufactured by leading tyre brands such as goodyear or dunlop.

Know what to look for
Markings on the sidewalls of your tyres will help you select the right tyres for your vehicle. This very helpful guide by Which? on understanding tyre markings explains the code behind tyre markings, and how to identify whether your vehicle requires run-flat tyres.
